Sunreef Yachts has just unveiled the most demanding technological project ever undertaken by its R&D department: the 90-foot Sunreef Zero Cat plans to be capable of producing its own hydrogen on board.
The multiyacht will be equipped with every bit of ECO technology (integrated high-power solar panels, hydrogenerator and high-tech batteries) which will first produce methanol. This green fuel can then be stored in the supercat’s conventional tanks. Next, a reformer will transform this methanol into hydrogen, which will power a fuel cell. The aim, of course, is to produce absolutely zero emissions - neither nitrogen oxide nor sulphur oxide - and to be 100% self-sufficient in energy. Other advantages include low noise and vibration levels, and reduced maintenance. The system will also guarantee a high level of safety, as no high-pressure hydrogen storage will be needed on board.
