1. Chartering a catamaran
Why charter a catamaran? It’s the best kind of
boat which can easily and comfortably accommodate four couples or two families
with children. One result of this is that it’s much cheaper than chartering two
smaller monohulls, while at the same time providing an unrivalled friendly
atmosphere. The children can play together in the salon, while the parents can
be in the cockpit, making the most of the anchorage. Everyone has their own
private space, yet can join in with the others whenever they like. Between the
flybridge (for catamarans equipped with one), the trampoline, the cockpit, the
salon, the cabins or the aft steps, not to mention the coachroof or hardtop
bimini, which are always the favorite among the youngest crew, a catamaran
allows everyone to find their spot for whatever they want to do.
Over 40 feet, catamarans offer 4 double cabins and either two or four
bathrooms. So what better way to sail comfortably with 8 crew, and up to 12 on
larger models? Chartering a catamaran is the best solution for the number of
people, cost and comfort…
… not forgetting the pleasure of sailing on the level.

2 - Sailing training on a multihull
Before taking the decision to set off, whether
it’s for a big trip or a few days’ vacation, most skippers wonder if they if
they’re up to leading their family and/or friends on this adventure. And let’s
face it, those who don’t ask themselves about safety at sea have no place being
out there…
If leisure sailing carries inherent risk, it is easy to reduce this by getting
good training in order to develop the essential on-board reflexes. Training can
be undertaken at any age and no matter what your level of competence. And
what’s more, training is always a great, fun time to share with other students
and instructors. So why not take advantage of it?
The best kind of
training is still by sailing with a professional skipper. Check out the
professionals in section 1 - notably Océans Evasion who offer specialist
workshops.

3 - Charter management solutions
Do you dream of owning your own catamaran, but think you can’t afford it? For a long time now a proven solution exists: charter management. The principle is simple: you buy a boat which you leave under management with a recognized charter company. As if for a “standard” purchase, a leasing plan will finance the acquisition, sometimes in partnership with the charter company. Every month, they will send you an income (which can be guaranteed), and offer you the option to sail several weeks each year on your own boat, or on an equivalent boat in their fleet. Generally a typical contract will allow you up to 12 weeks sailing a year, with options to arrange to use your boat more (or less) to suit your needs. There are many solutions depending on the level of your investment, the time you want to spend on your boat (or an equivalent boat in the charter fleet) every year, and the returns you are looking for.

4 - Financing your multihull
In order to finance your purchase, one of the best systems is leasing, or
charter with an option to buy. You can buy a new boat through leasing, but it
is equally possible to purchase a second-hand vessel with this type of
financing, subject to certain conditions. In theory, chartering with an option
to buy is only applicable to boats equipped for offshore sailing. Finally this
system allows for significant tax savings, with VAT on charters reducing from
20 to 10%.

5 - Choosing your multihull
Le Nautic, the Paris Boat Show, is a great
opportunity to see the cruising catamarans on display (the Lagoon 450, the
Fountaine-Pajot Helia 44 and the Bali 4.2), and also to meet many other
builders who have stands. Visiting these stands will better allow you to
develop your plans, and reflect on what your new boat will be, depending on
your program and your kind of sailing.

6 - Fitting out your multihull
The equipment you put on your boat is crucial, above all for safety, but also
in terms of performance. When you visit Le Nautic you’ll find all the essential
equipment for the safety of your boat and her crew. Check out the electronics
section, and you’re sure to find something missing from the final preparations
on your boat. Both chandlery and sails can be quite specific for multihulls,
and the show is best time to speak to the professionals who have specific
knowledge of catamarans and trimarans.

7 - On-board comfort for a multihull
A catamaran is already an incredibly comfortable boat, and one which can be loaded up. So don’t hang about, as you can equip your boat to greatly improve life on board for long-term cruising. Solar panels, generators, wind and hydro-generators, for power; watermakers, fridges and freezers to increase your independence. Many new ideas are on display at this year’s Le Nautic show.
