A multihull version of the Tour de France

The Tour de France à la Voile, a venerable institution and an essential race for all sailors dreaming of ocean racing, underwent a revolution in 2015. After the America’s Cup, the TdF has also gone over to multihulls…

The choice of craft fell on a 24-foot trimaran. The result: the end of offshore courses and instead, coastal regattas and rally-raids in close contact. After three weeks of racing and 9 stages along the French coasts, the 28 crews entered were rather pleased, as was the public, present in large numbers.
On a sporting level, the battle raged, and finally Spindrift won, with the same number of points as Groupama. It wasn’t the number of wins which decided between the two boats (5 each), but the number of second places (3 for Spindrift, 2 for Groupama). We regret the cancellation of the last stage in Nice, which promised a real fight between the two trimarans, but the weather conditions decided otherwise. In everyone’s opinion, skippers and organizing committee, the risk of capsizes and injuries was too great.
This 38th edition – the first in multihulls – was therefore a genuine success, and the organizers are already working on the next, which should again be raced in Diam 24s...
