The big players in Spain’s multihull industry had already organized a number of gatherings at Port Ginesta, near Barcelona... But this year, from May 1 to 5, a proper multihull show for second-hand and charter boats was held.
Despite a lackluster attendance at this premiere, the event clearly demonstrated the potential of a specialized show in Catalonia. Multihulls have got the wind in their sails, and Spain is no exception to the rule: its coastline and the nearby Balearic Islands are a classic Mediterranean sailing destination for yachtsmen on two or three hulls.
From the America’s Cup to boat shows in Palma, Valencia and Barcelona, Spanish boating is becoming increasingly significant in Europe. That’s why Andrés Oliva and Valentina Libri, influential players in the sector, decided to set up Multihull Fest, the first show dedicated to multihulls. Port Ginesta was chosen because of its prime location just a few miles south-west of Barcelona, and because it is one of a group of multihull-friendly Catalan ports reserving a substantial number of berths for visiting multihulls.
Despite the lateness of announcing the date, a large number of exhibitors - both sales and charter companies – were there in force, with over 15 units on display.
Along the pontoons, there was a Bali 5.4 with its genoa flocked with the effigy of Messi among the 5 examples presented by Med Cat Yachts, a NEEL 47 and a NEEL 43 Performance, a Lagoon 630 from Catamaran Center and, among others, an Aventura 37 dedicated to charter. This catamaran was exhibited by Rumbo Norte Ibiza. In addition to the show, two racing events specifically adapted to multihulls meant we got to see the highly motivated crews out on the water, delighted to be taking part in this first edition.
