On test: Helly Hansen Aegir Ocean Survival Suit

The waterproof, floating Helly Hansen Suit is genuine sailing clothing, which can really be used for long periods. Mobility of both arms and legs is unchanged, and remains comparable to that obtained in a traditional suit. The Helly Tech 3-ply membrane, waterproof and breathable, is carefully assembled in China. The stitching is waterproof, as is the excellent YKK zip fastener. I was able to test the Aegir dry suit during autumn and winter tests in 2017-2018, on the water at Lorient (November) and La Rochelle (January). The immersion test took place at the beginning of March, in water at 6°C. This suit is a nice object with an irreproachable appearance; the bright red color tested is both attractive and functional. The fluorescent yellow hood, the grey reflective patches, the black elements (zip, bottom and knee reinforcements, fleece collar lining), the general cut, the adjustable waist straps all give this survival suit a nice appearance, for clothing which can be used in the marina! It is a very technical suit, which must be chosen and adapted to the user’s size and build. The suit is perfectly waterproof and floats, but in the absence of an inflatable lifejacket, it is not guaranteed to turn you face up. The waterproof neoprene collar must be cut with scissors to optimize comfort at the neck. The membrane used is light, windproof and breathable…but it doesn’t keep you warm! You must therefore choose undergarments of the same technical level, perfectly compatible, depending on the conditions.
