From October 20 to 29 (start day), the port of Le Havre (in Normandy, France) will be hosting the Transat Jacques Vabre, one of the most prestigious international ocean racing events.
First held in 1993, this race, that’s also known as the “Route du café”, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Back then, the event brought together 13 solo sailors... then opened up to two-handed racing in 1995, following a rhythm of “odd-numbered years”. While the routes themselves have varied, taking participants to Cartagena, Salvador de Bahia, Itajaí, Puerto Limon and, since 2021, Fort-de-France in Martinique, one constant remains: both multihull categories are required to dive (a little) into the southern hemisphere, which makes predictions pretty tricky! Five duos are entered in the Ultim class and seven in the Ocean Fifty class.
