Multi50 Planet Warrior

3 hours’ flying time before hitting the water!

French skipper Fabrice Cahierc’s brand-new Multi50 left the Persico Marine shipyard on August 8th to reach the sea by air, thanks to a helicopter.

It was a far from simple operation: the three hulls – 50 feet (15.24 m) in length, and the same in beam, and 5,500 lbs (2.5 tonnes) in weight - had to be transported from Nembro, north-east of Bergamo (Italy) to Marina di Carrara, 6 mi (10 km) south-east of La Spezia. As the crow flies, that’s 93 mi (150 km) and one mountain range to cross. With the speed being (very) limited, flight time was estimated at around three hours. A significant amount of transport time which, when added to the need to climb to altitude, prompted Heliswiss International to plan to refuel their AS 332 Super Puma helicopter at the foot of the Apennine Mountains before overflying them.
