The ARC Transat, Emotion Still Intact

Some might think that having followed fifteen or so starts from Las Palmas and welcomed participants arriving on the other side of the Atlantic on ten or so occasions, in Saint Lucia or Grenada, that I’d be quite bored with this event by now... But, no!

Seeing more than 100 cruising boats set sail on the ocean, ready to stretch out a long 2,700-mile wake always leaves me with a heavy heart. I think of all the children embarked on this strange adventure - some of them only a few months old! There are dogs too, cats... And to be honest, I want to get on board as well. I'd watch the 12,188 feet (3,715 m) of Mount Teide slowly disappear astern as I turn and look... Ahead? The blue ocean and white waves, nothing else. As the sun sets for the first time, I might be a little scared. Crossing an ocean isn't the same as climbing Mount Everest, of course. But it's still an adventure where anything can happen. That's why my emotions are still intact.
