French Polynesia

Boating heaven to boating hell?

The archipelagoes of French Polynesia, thanks to their South Pacific location, their tradition of hospitality and their sublime lagoons, have always been an essential stopover for circumnavigators. For some yachtsmen, anchoring in Bora-Bora was perhaps even the highlight of their voyage - an emotion, an objective that in itself justified the great departure...

But in recent years, anchorages have become more and more regulated. The atmosphere has sometimes even become noxious, with boaters regularly accused of polluting some areas. Since March, the health crisis has clearly helped stir things up against sailors, now widely suspected of being carriers of the virus. The Association des Voiliers en Polynésie is trying to alert yachtsmen and the media to the lack of a legal framework concerning the anchoring bans which are flourishing across the archipelago. And notes that local authorities have made provision for some areas being for fixed moorings only... none of which have been installed. Let's hope that Tahiti and her islands will quickly become again an exceptional land of welcome and stopovers. And that her sites and inhabitants are respected, of course.
