The crew of PowerPlay, the trimaran run by Peter Cunningham and skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield, didn’t want to wait for summer conditions to tackle the original Fastnet course: the 595 miles from Cowes to Plymouth via the famous lighthouse - the most southerly point of Ireland - were swallowed up on April 5th and 6th in a time of 25 hours 4 minutes and 18 seconds.
The northerly wind was cold as it was powerful (up to 50 knots apparent), allowing the MOD70 to reduce the time set by Maxi Edmond de Rothschild during the 2019 Fastnet Race by almost 3 hours. Remember though that the organizers of this famous race, whose start is scheduled for August 8th this year, have announced a new finish line, in Cherbourg, France. An alternative race, faithful to the original Cowes-Plymouth route, called The Lonely Rock Race, is scheduled to take place early July.
