New Zealand closes its borders to sailors

After a complicated 2020 season for blue water cruisers, 2021 isn’t looking likely to get off to a favorable start in the Pacific Ocean: New Zealand has confirmed its refusal to receive non-resident boaters on stopovers or wishing to relax for a few months during cyclone season in the southwest Pacific, which runs from November through May.

Each year, around 300 cruising boats usually stop over in New Zealand. As for Australia, boaters are expecting a relaxation of the current rules – but without any guarantees yet. Fiji and French Polynesia remain, but if there’s a massive influx of cruisers, this could further complicate the relationship between sailors and locals.
