The story of this boatbuilder, now the undisputed benchmark for multihull blue water cruising, began just 40 years ago, in June 1984...
At La Grande-Motte in the South of France, two former Conati shipyard employees, naval architect Gérard Danson and technician Daniel Cailloux, began building a 40-foot catamaran. The hulls were slender, the displacement contained – much like the sail area. Notable was the low windage, the deck sheer, and the famous aluminum toe rail - but also... the fact that it was stripped down to a minimum! The Outremer 40 was born, and with it a new dynamic - a second model was ordered and the Atelier Outremer shipyard organized and expanded. Other larger models were launched, and Outremer models became popular not only for family cruising, but also for racing. Gérard Danson's death in 2005 marked the end of an era... the Grand Large Yachting group took over in 2007. The new team launched the Outremer 49 in 2009. This model featured a design by new architects and construction in infusion. The catamaran remained seaworthy and high-performance, but in terms of comfort, the “new Outremer” was closer to the standards of mass-produced catamarans (walk-through nacelle, 360° view, domestic equipment...). A winning formula and the prelude to a fine success story: today, over 400 Outremers are sailing the seas and oceans...
